- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup bread crumbs
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp oil
For the Onion Gravy:
- 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced onion
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 tsp salt
How to Make
Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
- Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, black pepper, 1 tsp salt, onion powder, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce until well combined.
- Shape Patties: Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties.
Cook the Hamburger Steaks:
- Heat the Skillet: In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat.
- Cook the Patties: Add the hamburger patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Prepare the Onion Gravy:
- Caramelize Onions: In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions and cook over medium heat until they are softened and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add Flour: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to coat evenly. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Make Gravy: Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add the remaining 1/2 tsp salt and continue to cook until the gravy thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
Combine and Serve:
- Simmer: Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the onion gravy. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat through and allow the flavors to meld.
- Serve: Serve the hamburger steaks hot, topped with the onion gravy. Enjoy your savory hamburger steaks with onion gravy!
Helpful Tips:
- Meat Selection: For extra juicy hamburger steaks, consider using ground beef with a slightly higher fat content, such as 80/20.
- Even Cooking: Make sure to shape the patties evenly to ensure they cook uniformly.
- Gravy Consistency: If the gravy is too thick, add a bit more beef broth. If it’s too thin, let it simmer a bit longer to thicken.
Cooking Tips:
- Browning Patties: Don’t overcrowd the skillet when browning the patties to ensure a good sear.
- Caramelizing Onions: Take your time with caramelizing the onions. The slower you cook them, the sweeter and more flavorful they will become.
Serving Suggestions:
Hamburger steaks with onion gravy pair wonderfully with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or a simple green salad. You can also serve them with rice or buttered noodles for a complete meal.

More Helpful Tips for Perfect Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
Choosing the Right Ground Beef:
When selecting ground beef, opt for a blend with a bit more fat, such as an 80/20 mix (80% lean, 20% fat). The higher fat content will result in juicier and more flavorful hamburger steaks. If you prefer a leaner option, be sure to adjust the cooking time accordingly to avoid drying out the patties.
Mixing the Ingredients:
For the best texture, avoid over-mixing the ground beef mixture. Over-mixing can lead to dense, tough patties. Use your hands to gently combine the ingredients until they are just mixed.
Forming the Patties:
When shaping the patties, try to make them as uniform in size and thickness as possible. This ensures even cooking and helps prevent any patties from being over- or under-cooked.
Cooking the Patties:
Preheat your skillet before adding the patties. A hot skillet helps to achieve a nice sear on the outside while keeping the inside juicy. If you’re cooking multiple batches, you may need to add a bit more oil to the skillet between batches.
Making the Onion Gravy:
Caramelizing the onions is a crucial step in developing the rich, sweet flavor of the gravy. Be patient and cook the onions slowly over medium heat until they are golden brown. This process can take a bit longer, but the results are well worth the extra time.
Adjusting the Gravy:
After adding the flour and broth, keep stirring the gravy to prevent lumps from forming. If the gravy becomes too thick, add a bit more beef broth until you reach the desired consistency. If it’s too thin, let it simmer a bit longer to thicken up.
Variations and Additions
Mushroom Gravy:
For a twist on the classic recipe, add sliced mushrooms to the skillet along with the onions. Cook the mushrooms until they are browned and softened, then proceed with the rest of the gravy recipe. Mushroom gravy adds a delicious earthy flavor to the dish.
Cheese-Stuffed Patties:
For a surprise inside each patty, try stuffing them with a small cube of cheese before cooking. Cheddar, Swiss, or even blue cheese can add a burst of flavor when you cut into the patty.
Herb-Infused Gravy:
Experiment with adding different herbs to the gravy for extra flavor. Fresh thyme, rosemary, or parsley can be stirred into the gravy just before serving.
Spicy Kick:
If you like a bit of heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the ground beef mixture or the gravy.
Side Dish Pairings
Mashed Potatoes:
Creamy mashed potatoes are the perfect accompaniment to hamburger steaks with onion gravy. The smooth texture of the potatoes complements the rich gravy and juicy patties.
Roasted Vegetables:
Serve the hamburger steaks with a side of roasted vegetables for a well-rounded meal. Carrots, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli all roast beautifully and add color and nutrition to your plate.
Buttered Noodles:
Buttered noodles are a simple and delicious side dish that pairs well with the savory gravy. Egg noodles or wide pasta ribbons work particularly well.
Green Salad:
A fresh green salad with a light vinaigrette can help balance the richness of the hamburger steaks and gravy. Consider adding some sliced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and red onion for extra crunch and flavor.
